The Palace and its environments

Selection of the nine environments and their characteristics

The Palace on Via XX Settembre bears witness to how a building can enclose the needs of a modern and efficient administrative machine and the story of man's relationship with the land.
Founded in the early 1900s, between the height of the Belle Époque and the outbreak of the Great War, the Palazzo dell'Agricoltura tells us the story of the great enthusiasm which brought together architects, engineers and artists, all involved in the construction of the Ministry. but who were also dedicated in presenting Rome as the new capital of the Kingdom.

The laying of the foundation stone took place on June 7th 1908. King Vittorio Emanuele III and the Minister of Agriculture Francesco Cocco Ortu layed it on a state-owned area of the former Convent of S. Maria della Vittoria.

Latin inscription around the facade

Following in the footsteps of the ancient tradition of adorning the facades of buildings with Latin dedicatory inscriptions, the building also followed this fashion. In Rome alone, nearly 700 buildings, are decorated with Latin mottos and brocards .

Per mare, per terras it vis humana per aethram Dum superat generi virtus antiqua parentum, augeat Italiam divini gloria ruris Ars felix victorque labor sibi vindicat orbem

By the sea, by the land, by the air goes human strength While the ancient virtue of the fathers remains in the lineage, Let the glory of the divine country increase Italy Prosperous art and victorious labor claim the world

This are the Latin inscriptions that crown the exterior walls of the MInistry composed in 1913 by latinist Giuseppe Albini. They celebrate agriculture and man's labor.
