The Atrium

The atrium designed by Giuseppe Canonica with classical lines inspired by Bramante, is adorned with 22 columns of red granite from Baveno.

On the side walls of the atrium are six bronze high-reliefs by Guido Calori and Benedetto D'Amore. These high-reliefs celebratie the work in the fields and foundries in ancient times. Five gates, with striking floral decorations, separate the atrium from the outside.

The gates and the wrought-iron lamps in the interior, are the work of Alberto Gerardi. In the center of the atrium are two bronze statues of later date.

They are, in fact, two works purchased by the Ministry in 1939 on the occasion of the 3rd Rome Quadrennial where they were exhibited: La buona terra (The good land) by Aroldo Bellini and Al di la dell'aratro (Beyond the Plow) by Domenico Ponzi. Two authors who left in the capital many testimonies of their art.
