Globe and Ancient Catalogues hall

In this room are the ancient catalogs on which scholars search for texts.

A commercial world map by German cartographer Heinrich Kiepert towers in this room. He was one of the most important cartographic scholars of the second half of the 19th century. Trained at the University of Berlin, he became interested in history, philology and geography.

In 1840, in collaboration with publisher Karl Ritter, he produced his first work, an Atlas of Greece and the Hellenic Colonies, which immediately made him well-known in the field of ancient historical cartography. Between 1845 and 1852 he directed the Weimar Geographical Institute and from 1854 was a lecturer at the University of Berlin.

Neither the provenance nor the date of the purchase of this beautiful specimen is known, but certainly the globe bears witness to the mission of the  Ministry of Agriculture which was also competent for industry and trade.
